Trooper Down

Life & Death on the Highway Patrol

Now updated in e-book on Nook!
Trooper DownBeginning with a “routine” patrol that is anything but, this nonfiction book presents a startling series of anonymous anecdotes from North Carolina highway state troopers who talk revealingly about their lives and their work. From true stories of knife-wielding drunks and drug-dealing youth, Trooper Down is a series of police stories that give readers an inside look at the day-to-day lives of the men and women of the NC highway patrol. In the final chapters of the book, the terrifying events that surround the slaying of three police officers are described in detail, along with the manhunts that followed. These are police stories that are brought to life in vivid detail. Noted Washington columnist James J. Kilpatrick called the book “remarkable” and the police stories “unforgettable.”

This is an excellent guide to discovering who stands behind the badges of the Highway Patrol. I have a newfound appreciation for the men and women who risk their lives each day even when they have to do so in an environment of decreasing respect and increasing firepower. I strongly recommend this book.

I am fifteen years old and from the time I was ten, I wanted to be a state trooper. I thought that the Highway Patrol was a safe lifestyle. Then I read this book and discovered that the patrol is a dangerous business. Bits of the book were very frightening and sad. Everyone should read this book to see what troopers are really like.

A realistic overall picture of what it is like to be a state trooper. It is obvious that actual troopers had direct input into the composition of this book.
